When did you start to craft?
As little girl when my mom showed me how to do it.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
From a friend who makes jewelry, after some time thinking about it I joined on Aug 31, 2009

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
I make bunnies for kids but they are also for adults a nice gift. And I make bags, totes and wallets, so mainly women and moms are my target.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidering. Last year I bought the full equipment for making mosaics and I like to try this too. And I tried with less success to work with Polymer Clay but even my 4 year old daughter made better things than I.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
Cotton fabrics - I love the versatility of this material.

How did you hear about Indie Junction?
I think it was on Twitter from ZurDesigns

What are your inspirations?
I see things in shops or in the net which are nice and lovely but wouldn’t it be better to change this and make it upside down and the inside out. I always want to improve things.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
I think it is important not to be creative for profit or somebody else but for oneself. My creative work makes me proud and satisfies me.

Where are you from?
I once heard a comedian say that when you ask an American where they're from, you get a travelogue. I'm one of those people. I was born in New York City, raised in Florida, went to university in Pennsylvania, and now am a dual citizen living in beautiful BC, Canada. I essentially live right in the middle of where the 2010 Winter Olympics is being held.

When did you start to craft?
I joined the Girl Scouts the first year I could and was involved in that program all the way through the end of high school, so I've been doing one craft or another for most of my life.

As an adult, about 10 years ago I took up stained glass and then mosaics. I was quite into it, took classes, and sold some work, but I didn't like being banished into the garage to work on it ... we have dogs and I can't risk them getting hurt with broken glass, etc. I'm also one of those people who likes to flit from one task to another and I didn't find that those crafts worked well with that approach. I petered out eventually and stopped doing them, though I'd like to do more, if for no other reason than to use up the glass I have left.

Last year I realized that I really missed working with my hands and making beautiful things. I took a jewelry-making class at a local rec center and knew I'd found my new obsession.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I think I had encountered Etsy before because of a friend or two selling there, but I didn't actually sign up for an account and open a shop until late last year. A friend of mine (http://tinahdee.etsy.com/) does quite well there and has been very generous with pointers and advice.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
I'm still relatively new and am finding my style(s), so I don't have as firm an answer to this question as I should as a businessperson. I like to say that my work is geared toward a range of budgets, as I have plenty of pieces based around glass and plated metals, and I have a growing number of pieces made with a variety of stones.

I like variety and suspect that I'll end up aiming toward more than one market. Whether I'll ultimately have to split into multiple Etsy shops is something I'll deal with when the time comes. One of my goals is to sell locally, and right now I have my eye on three venues with three different demographics. One is a local farmer's market where I'll mostly take my less expensive items and experiment to see what people like and will buy there. Another is a local florist who carries jewelry and other items in her shop, and is interested in a more mid-range product, and the third is a local gallery that wants something higher end and cohesive as a collection.

As I look over other items I've made, I can see pieces that hit a visual note that I think I can build other collections around at various price points and aimed at different markets.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Primarily jewelry. I've also made wine glass charms, and am taking a class next month that will probably expand what housewares I make.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
Glass, freshwater pearls, sterling silver, granite, serpentine, wire, chain, and many different types of stones.

What are your inspirations?
The collection I'm making for the gallery is based around the local concept of "Sea to Sky," which refers to the fact that we live along a highway that takes you from the coast of an estuary into the mountains of Whistler and beyond. In this collection I'm using granite as we're surrounded by so much of it, sea green serpentine to represent the sea, and sterling silver.

Often I just like to stare at the materials I have and choose something that catches my eye to build a piece around. I like to play with light, texture, color, and shape and push it at times to see what I can get away with.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
If you want to make sure you don't lose money (let alone make money), find a way to track how much it costs you to make an item. I use software called Bead Manager Pro to feed in my supplies, and then feed in what supplies I use in a particular piece, how much I want to make per hour, and how long the piece took to make. If I didn't, I'd really only be guessing what I should charge for something.

Where are you from?
My mum LOL!! South Australia in Australia.

When did you start to craft?
For as long as I can remember I have done something creative, whether it be painting, cross stitch, knitting or theatre work.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I first heard about Etsy about 2 years ago on a Forum - someone who saw more work thought I might be interested. I didnt actually join Etsy until a few months ago, although I've been on ArtFire for almost a year.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
One with money LOL!! I dont think I have directed my work towards any particular demographic.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
I make jewellery, including chainmaille and bead embroidered pieces. I also make polymer clay pieces, including beads and clasps. I also paint mandalas when the mood strikes.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I mainly work with polymer clay, gemmies, Swaros, Czech, plated and precious metals - I happily use any materials necessary to create what is in my head.

What are your inspirations?
I draw inspiration from everything around me, including books, magazines, other people, nature, fantasy, colours... but I guess my biggest inspiration is my own need to be creative.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Don't judge yourself by other people's standards, be true to yourself and your own creativity.

My featured Indie Junction artist this week is Janine Basil. Janine has been a part of Indie Junction for a while and we all love her to bits. Where are you from?
Well, I currently live in London, but I'm a small town girl originally! I'm from a little town called South Molton in Devon. It's an idyllic place for kids and I did love it then, but it became boring at 15! I've lived in several other places in the UK since going to college and they've all stamped their mark on me in one way or another.

When did you start to craft?
The first thing I remember making to any degree of success was some tiny roses for my Sindy doll (British version of Barbie). I was about 6 then and I've not stopped since. I even had to hide it for many years when my mother developed severe OCD and couldn't cope with the mess of me making stuff (and believe me, I'm messy!). I don't think I'll link her to this feature as I'm not sure she knows about it even now!

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
Wow... when did I hear about it? I think it was very close to it starting. I joined about a year later but with a different user name. I didn't start selling until December last year though as I never quite found what it was I wanted to sell. But now I have found my calling!

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
I guess a lot of it is geared towards the burlesque market. Performers and those that just want to dress up! Also fans of vintage wear and hopefully hat wearers in general. I'm also going to be adding a bridal line soon, so alternative brides too.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Millinery primarily. But I also dress make and make some jewellery. I'm a practical kind of girl really.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I just LOVE buckram! For those that don't know buckram is a stiff cloth, made of cotton mostly, and in this case for millinery it also has an adhesive coated onto it. This, when dampened down can be formed over a block or dolly head (wooden head shaped block) to make bases for fascinators. I use it double and when it dries it forms a lovely hard shell which I can then cover how ever I like.I also love the glitter display fabric I have. It's amazing stuff and hardly drops any glitter at all.

What are your inspirations?
Mostly old films. I am hugely influenced by the hats from the 30's-60's. I rarely copy any I see like for like, but I think it can be seen in my work. Sometimes I'll see a piece of jewelley or clothing that will suddenly make something start ticking over. Most obviously I'm influenced by fabrics. Having worked for many years in fabric and sewing shops I couldn't help but be affected by that!

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
I guess it's go with your heart and you'll find what's right in the end. And then hopefully someone will want to buy it :D

Where are you from?
I'm originally from NY but drove out to California in 2004. Yes, drove!

When did you start to craft?
I started crafting when I was a kid. My mom taught me how to sew. But it wasn't until just recently that I started taking it more seriously as a side business.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I am not sure how I found out about Etsy originally but I had a buyer account back in 2008 I believe. I'm sure I stumbled upon it while searching for birthday gifts for family and friends.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
I think more towards young to middle aged women, though there are some items in my shop for just about anyone.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
I work mainly with felt but I'd like to eventually begin sewing with pretty patterned fabrics. Right now I make felt iPod cozies and brooches. My shop is always evolving!

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
Right now, it's all about the felt!

What are your inspirations?
Bright, fun colors and real life objects.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Practice makes perfect. It takes a while to perfect your stitches so they look flawless. Also, many of my designs come from doodles so let your imagination go free!

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
When I first started I was geared for women's clothing and vintage. I have branched through the year with some crafts and costumes. I love it all but fashion is my passion.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?

I like all kinds of fabric though stretch stuff is harder to work with.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Keep with it, don't get so discouraged because you have lots of hearts and views. Think of how many hearts and stuff you have looked at but didn't buy. Women are shoppers and they like to look around.

Bright Aluminum, Brass, Argentium Silver, Sterling Silver, Enameled Copper, and soon Anodized Aluminum

What are your inspirations?

I love to learn new techniques and combine them with old ones. I also like to look through the projects in the books I own and use the elements to create something new.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?

Even if idea doesn’t work out, take it down a new path. You never know, you could still make something wonderful!

Where are you from?
I live in Central IL.

When did you start to craft?
I started working with polymer clay around the age of 12 or 13, but didn't become serious about it until several years later. I am now 16 and run my Etsy shop along with my older sister who also sells headbands on our shop.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
My older sister introduced my to Etsy earlier this year when she bought some fabric from a seller. I was amazed at the wide variety of unique and lovely items that were sold here!
We joined in April, but didn't start selling until late August.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
My work is geared mostly towards girls and ladies, ages 6 - 30, but I do have some items that would interest older ladies as well.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Many of the creations I make are turned into push pins sets, Christmas ornaments, pendants, and more. I also love making custom orders and have work with several great customers in the past few months.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I mostly work with polymer clay, a durable and easy to work with clay. Everything I make is done by hand, no molds are used.

What are your inspirations?
I love making miniatures, so a lot of my items are inspired by doll house foods or larger scale items that I think would be cute made into a miniatures.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
If you are looking for a fun new hobby, I suggest getting into polymer clay. There is such a wide variety of books out there with so many ideas, from cute animals to elaborate flower arrangments that you can never get bored!
Polymer clay is great for young crafters as well because it is non toxic and lead free. Children will also find it pretty easy to work with as well.

Where are you from?
I am from Rhode Island

When did you start to craft?
I have been interested in sewing since I was a little girl. I loved to watch my Mom and my older sister sew and I learned by watching them. I have been sewing since - making my own clothes - then sewing for my children, making quilts, and now I have started making purses.
I started taking stained glass lessons 9 years ago.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
My daughter told me about Etsy and suggested I give it a try. I have been selling my stained glass art at local consignment and gift stores for 7 years. I joined in October 2009.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
My purses and bags are geared to 16 to 35 age group for the most part. Then again my Mom who is 86 bought a purse from me.
As for my glass art, my work is geared for 13 to 113. There are suncatchers to medium size panels in a variety of styles and themes. I also take special orders.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
I enjoy sewing, quilting, stained glass, needle work, gardening and cooking.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I love the vibrant colors of cotton. Most of my bags are made of cotton. It is so easy to take care of.
For my glass I use many different glass distributors. I don't believe I have a favorite. I will use the glass that I think works best with the piece I am creating. If I had to choose one glass company I would choose Youghiogheny glass. This glass has so many different colors, and movement in the glass - just beautiful.

What are your inspirations?
My inspirations come from the fabric itself. When I see a certain fabric - it just speaks to me. I know immediately what kind of purse I want to make from it. My inspirations also come from nature and my family.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Do what you enjoy doing. If it makes you happy - go with it.

Where are you from?
I live in Manchester in the UK.

When did you start to craft?
I've been crafting since I was 5. I learnt to knit at that age and haven't stopped knitting since. I have been a ceramicist for the last 5 years, but broke a vertebra in a riding accident last summer so was unable to lift heavy bags of clay. Instead, I turned to beaded jewellery after a few idle hours of browsing the online suppliers.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I heard about Etsy from a few crafter friends, but have actually joined Folksy which is the UK equivalent, as well as Zibbet.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
Mostly women of all ages, but my ceramic work is for everyone.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
So far most of my jewellery has been simple beading work, but I'm discovering new techniques all the time, and now I create knitted wire and woven wire jewellery as well as some wire wrapped pieces. I'm also getting into precious metal clay. I have my own kiln so am able to fire pieces along with my ceramic work.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I love sourcing unusual glass beads, especially lampwork, and I plan to move on to sterling silver wire soon. I adore getting my hands dirty with clay, and discovering new glaze colours.

How did you hear about Indie Junction?
One of my fans on Facebook spread the word.

What are your inspirations?
The sea is my big inspiration. The changing colours of the ocean, all those fabulous blue and green hues. I also love the way nature can throw clashing colours together for an amazing result. All those beautiful marine fish with their wild colours, for example, look gorgeous and so I like to put colours together that shouldn't be combined.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Believe in yourself, and don't expect to get rich via crafting. Don't give up on yourself and promote like crazy.

From childhood I used to knit paint furnitures, draw with watercolor...

I heard about it last year from Lirola a succssesful etsy seller. I Joined in July 2009.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?

Mainly women from all ages who love colors and designs which are a bit retro (60/70's)

yet keeps clean modern lines. Its also geared towards hostess gift and nice affordable

gift for coworker.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?

My main craft now is the decorative painted objects (flowers/containers/fun ideas) made from cold clay. I do also knit accessories (hats, jewelry, bags..). I paint and draw but i hope to introduce my art later on.

Where are you from?
I live in southern California. I live in a little town called Apple Valley, but my hometown is Huntington Beach.

When did you start to craft?
I started sewing when I was 14. A friend of mine had a dress made out of strawberry fabric that I really liked and couldn't afford, so my mom (who also sews) helped me make a similiar dress.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I had heard about Etsy about 2 years ago from a friend who makes jewelry. I browsed through it a bit, but was not very interested. At the time I was selling in local shops and didn't think much about it. Last May I did look at Etsy again and really loved it. I joined in May, but didn't set up shop until August.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
I think that my market is more for the 20 + girls who want to have something different then the other girls at work, go out for cocktails on weeknights with friends, shop at boutiques rather then brand name stores and have thier own unique style.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
I make handmade handbags. clutches, makeupbag and billfolds, diaper bags and aprons.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I work with all types of fabrics. I always make my way to the upholstory section, but I use any fabric with a great texture or print. I use tapestries, cordoroy, cotton, upholstory and wool along with some great vintage finds. I use wire to make the handles of my handbags along with fabric covered buttons and cardboard.

What are your inspirations?
I find inspiration alot of times in a fabric store. I also find inspiration from watching old movies on TCM.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
I'm still new to Etsy and am still learning as I go. Advice that I had heard and I took into my life and work is to do what you do the best that you can. Dont worry about other shops and how they are doing, how many sales they have, their products and how they run their buisness. Do what you do and try to improve your buisness in your own unique way.

Where are you from?
Pomona, CA it's a pretty boring city and it's kinda small, but we have a cool venue THE GLASSHOUSE!! so that's about the only exciting thing here...well that and the Fox Theater reopened, oh yes.

When did you start to craft?
Well my neighbor wanted to teach me how to crochet when I was 15 and that's what got it all started again, when I was a little girl I liked to make things here and there but I got more into it by 17 as I started to explore different mediums

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I forget how I heard about Etsy, I think I was looking on google search results about how to sell your crafts and one blog mentioned Etsy. I joined Etsy on November 14, 2008.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?

The cute color kind! Basically people who like cutesy asian items that are anime inspired. Because cute is what I aim for :D Also, it's also geared towards people who want to help out animals and in exchange they get and item :D Most of my sales go for animal charity donations, I just save up whatever I make from every sale at the end of the month and make my contribution.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Well my crafts are a bit different from my artworks. For the crafting section I just like to make amigurimi dolls and recently I've dove into book making (not the greatest at it because I can't do fancy shmancy pro lookin' books), I make polymer clay charms and lots and lots of kandi bracelets :D
Artwork section: well...I'm barely going to start trying to sell my artwork on Etsy because I've just been selling my art to friends of friends but it's like the rainbow decided to go on a rampage all over my paper. My art is very very colorful :D but then again it depends what mood I'm in

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
for my artwork I love love love to mix: watercolors, acrylics, ink, and markers!

crafting: yarn, felt, fabrics, and clay....oh and some paper here and there.

What are your inspirations?
Asian pop culture (probably due to the fact that I'm asian XD)
as well as nature. I get different ideas from animals and different foods I see. But what mainly inspires me are colors.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
It's hard but keep going at it. My mother always said "knock on every door because even though you get lots of 'No's' there will one day be a door that opens up and says 'yes'."

there will eventually be someone who finds you and loves what you do and how you do it, so don't worry if sales aren't coming in or if you're not getting noticed, just keep working at it and trying.

Where are you from?
Originally an Air Force brat, I was able to travel and live in many different places growing up. As an adult I chose to move to the Bay Area where I am currently getting my Master's in Ceramic Art at San Francisco State.

When did you start to craft?
I grew up crafting with my mom. Yet I started creating ceramic jewelry when a fellow student and jewelry artist at SFSU commented on my glaze test tiles. Taryn McCabe of tomgirl.etsy.com suggested that I make my test tiles into jewelry pieces and that inspired me to start Shendoe.etsy.com.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I have been buying from Etsy for a few years, but didn't start making and selling until November of '08.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?
My porcelain jewelry is perfect for the woman who loves jewelry but feels limited by the current style trends and materials. My pieces are a often bold with color, yet have a subtle and delicate edge to them. The material of porcelain allows me to use push jewelry beyond the bobbles and beads into a more fine art quality.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
My porcelain jewelry is very closely tied to the ceramic sculpture I make. I am inspired by feminine imagery, pattern, and pre-existing imagery associated with porcelain tea sets, social values, and women. Each piece is made individually so it is often one of a kind.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I make and use the same porcelain clay body and glazes for my jewelry as I do for my porcelain sculptures. I use open stock ceramic overglaze decals to add vibrant images to my work.

What are your inspirations?
I find inspiration everywhere. I look for patterns, florals, shapes that interest me. Often I go to thrift stores or resale shops to look at fabric, buttons, and vintage jewelry to get ideas for design. I don't often know what I am looking for, but when I find it there is no question that I am inspired by it.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Follow your passion!

Where are you from?
I was born in New York and lived there until 2001 when my family and I moved to Florida. About 4 years ago we bought our first house in North Carolina and I've been here ever since.

When did you start to craft?
My Grandfather was an artist and taught me everything he knew when I was a young child and I've continued to paint and create my whole life. I began to sell my artwork online in 2009.

I paint custom pet portraits, original paintings of cats (and other animals :P) , mixed media Kitty CollageCards (ACEO art cards featuring my handpainted kitties) andI recently began making polymer clay pendants, charms and small sculptures.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I love using vintage ephemera such as small charms as well as different scraps of paper I've collected throughout the years that have pretty patterns and textures in my mixed media pieces. As for painting I pretty much stick to acrylics since I am impatient and can't wait for oil paint to dry :D

What are your inspirations?
The love that pets and thier human companions share with each other is a big inspiration to me--I try to show my own love for animals in my work.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
I think the best thing we as artisans can do is to donate some of our earnings to helping animals in need--it makes a difference in the animals life and you feel pretty good knowing you made a difference.

I was born in and still reside in the state of Maryland

When did you start to craft?
I always loved art. I studied drawing when I was young, took classes in college. I learned how to knit from my grandmother when she visited from Colorado (while I was in college) and I never put the needles down since.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I have known about ETSY for a long time. I have been a lurker/admirer for about 1-2 years. I am finally a member (couple of months ago) and my goal is to set up my store in the next week or two.

The market for my pieces is anyone who likes jewlery. I have tried to create pieces for varying tastes. (Glam line for BIG and BOLD- thin cuffs for those with more delicate wrists etc) I would say my range is from 18-75. Each piece is unique and it appeals to people for different reasons.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Hmmmm- where to start? I draw, I paint, I did faux finishes and murals in peoples homes, I knit every day and I also sometimes dabble in professional face paints.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
Currently I work with all types of czech beads, semi precious stones, varying sizes of cords/threads and now wire.

What are your inspirations?
Many things inspire me: color, texture, seeing others' creations- but daily- my children (twin boys) inspire me. My one son was diagnosed with epilepsy almost three years ago and the smile on that kid's face (EVERY DAY)- makes me want to conquer the world!

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
To other crafters- never stop creating; whether it is for yourself, friends, family or the public- always make the time to create and work on your passion. It's good for you!

I live in Victoria, B.C. Canada, which is located on beautiful Vancouver Island.

When did you start to craft?
Creating has always been in my soul. I can't remember a time when I haven't been drawn to colors, textures and patterns. I am constantly looking at objects and thinking of ways to improve or change their appearance...it's a bit of a curse!

What are your inspirations?
I am deeply inspired by:
*Beautiful items from the past...my home is filled with a mixture of shabby chic "junque", vintage finds, and antique furniture.
*Roses and peonies.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
My advice to other crafter's and also to myself, (sometimes I have to be reminded) is to follow your heart and do what makes you feel proud.

Where are you from?
I am originally from Indianapolis In but I now live in a very small town in northern Indiana.

When did you start to craft?
I started crafting in the 70's as a young stay at home wife and mother. It started with just looking for something to fill my time. I got passionate about what I was doing and turned it into a way to make a little extra money attending craft shows and bazaars.
How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I heard about Etsy from my sister who had heard about it on a morning news program over a year ago. I didn't look seriously into it until last summer. I've always been intiminated by anything that involved a computer. I finally joined in July of 09 but still procrastinated listing anything until mid November. I still was unsure if I could create the shop but it all came much easier than I expected.

What kind of market is your work

geared towards?
I don't really know how to answer what market my craft is geared toward. I try to create items that could be geared toward anyone. A retired couple or anyone who just likes to sit in their yard and watch the birds, to a child who would love their favorite animal or character on their lamp or night light in their room. To some of my higher priced pieces for someone who would want a unique, carved or sculpted piece of art. For someone who just wants something cute to put in their yard or somewhere in their house. So I guess I don't have a particular market that I've geared myself toward.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
I have done many crafts through the years, I love trying new things. I have been working with gourds for about 8 years now. But I have done woodworking, building rocking horses and furniture to something as simple of shelves. I crochet, I have made dolls, I sew, paint on glass and metal, scrapbooking, you name I have probably tried it over the last 35 plus years.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I love working with gourds. I love the transformation they make from the time they are scrubbed then painted or woodburned or sculpted or carved. I guess that's why I came up with Gourds Adored as my buisness name. I adore every single one when I'm finished with whatever I've decided to do with it.
What are your inspirations?
Just the world and life in general.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Just hang in there. Love what you do and and do what you love. That love will reflect in your creations. Set goals and go for it, when you reach it, set another one, they will all be reachable if your willing to put the work into it. My goals have changed alot over years. Being new to selling on line, I started my new goals very simple, so not to get discouraged. Once I found that I COULD set up that shop, could make my first on line sale, "I'm shootin for the moon!"

Where are you from?

I grew up in Ventura, CA but

lived in Fort Collins, CO for so long that really feels like home. I sure miss it!

When did you start to craft?
I have been "crafting" as long as I can remember. When I was a kid it was Popsicle stick castles and cardboard box forts. A few years back it was chocolates and now I work in wood. I have been chip carving for several years but just picked up wood turning and penmaking in 2008.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?
I don't remember who told me about Etsy. It was one of those random things. I created The Norsk Woodshop last year in February. I really can't believe that my shop has been up for almost a year!

What kind of market is your work geared cowards?
Everyone needs a pen but I really tend to market toward guys, or more specifically gifts for guys. Besides Etsy, I have tried shops on ArtFire and 1000 Markets but Etsy seems have such a huge (and great) list of customers so I think it is time to focus my efforts a bit.

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?
Handcrafted pens made of exotic woods from all over the world and colorful acrylics. I love my pens! I pretty much carry a different pen with me every day and have sold the one out of my pocket on a couple of occasions.
I turn other functional and artistic items including bowls, vases, and boxes. Most of my bowls are turned with "found wood" including wood found on the side of the road or at our local tree trimming recycling area.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?
I use a lot of wood including found wood and pen blanked sourced from around the world (mostly from Ebay). Some of my favorite species are olive wood (most of which comes from Bethlehem), koa, camphor, and box elder.
I also turn a lot of pens out of acrylic pen blanks. These are pre-cast blanks that have awesome colors and when finished have a wonderful feel and are very iridescent in the sunlight.

What are your inspirations?
I try to let the wood talk to me. When I mount a piece of wood on the lathe and start to remove the wood and make it round you can start to see what it wants to look like. I use the grain patterns and flaws in the wood dictate where the next cut should be to make a great bowl or vase. As for my pens, they are a bit simpler...it is just matching up the right kit with the right blank and turning a great shape. I try to stick with smooth transitions and soft finishes.

What is some advice you could share with other crafters?
Do a craft show! You will love the face to face interactions with your customers (or prospective customers). It is a great way to get feedback on your designs, get ideas for new products, and start to build your local clientèle (and mailing list). It doesn't have to be fancy, just get out there!

Where are you from?

I currently live in NW Florida, but originally from GA. I was a service brat though, so I also lived out West for a while.

When did you start to craft?

I've been doing some sort of craft ever since I can remember. I used to draw paper dolls and make clothes for them as a pre-teen. I've dabbled in lots of crafts, needlepoint, cross-stitch, quilting, decorative painting, precious metal clay & polymer clay. About 8 years ago I discovered beads and jewelry making and became totally addicted.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?

I joined Etsy in May 2007 as a buyer. I heard about it on a wire working board I belonged to and wanted to buy a tutorial from one of the members who sold on Etsy. I opened my own shop in May 2008.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?

My work is geared toward women who love traditional and feminine jewelry that is unique and often one of a kind. She appreciates the bling and lasting quality of gemstones, but doesn't always follow the crowd.
What types of crafts/artwork do you do?

I make wire wrapped jewelry, from simple to more complex in a traditional style. Some is made with purchased components, I love and can't resist filagree or art deco style pieces, and some is made from scratch using fine and sterling silver wire. I plan to start learning more metalsmithing techniques this year, beginning with sheet copper and silver and also would like to work more with precious metal clays.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?

I prefer sterling silver and gemstones, but also use gold-filled, a little silver or gold plate and brass and copper.

What are your inspirations?

I find inspiration everywhere. I might see a pattern in a rug and think that would make a great bracelet, or come across a unique component and know exactly what I want to do with it. Other times I play, a lot of which doesn't turn out, but I always learn from play.
Words of advice for other crafters?

Never stop learning something new about your craft or art and you will never be bored with it.

I make handmade jewelry, hair blossoms, and greeting cards. I occassionally venture my stamping abilities on other mediums (such as kitchen towels and other housewares).

What are your inspirations?

My philosophy has been shaped by Andy Warhol (hence the shop name). I believe that there is beauty in anything and everything. I like to showcase the beauty in ordinary things (bicycles, sewing machines, nests). However, my style is a little less "pop" than Warhol's and a little more rustic and vintage.

Where are you from?

I live in a small town called Weaverville, NC. It is in the mountains of Western North Carolina about 20 miles or so north of Asheville, NC. I have lived in the mountains all of my life. My hometown is actually smaller than the town I live in now.

When did you start to craft?

I have done some sort of art/craft for as long as I can remember. I really enjoyed drawing and painting in middle and high school. I have been able to do embroidery and cross stitch since I was a child. My grandmother use to draw small pictures of animals and plants onto old pillowcases to teach me how to embroider. I taught myself how to knit and crochet a couple of years ago. As for my jewelry I just started learning to make wire jewelry about a year and a half ago.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?

My best friend told me about Etsy when one of her coworkers mentioned it to her. I joined about 6 months later in October of 2008.

I love working with sterling silver wire and sheet metal, copper, and natural stones. I also like some glass beads particularly czech glass.

What are your inspirations?

I draw inspiration from all kinds of things. A lot of my inspiration comes from my family, my mom, aunts, and eldest niece especially. I am also inspired by my favorite books, tv shows, movies I watch, music, trees, flowers, weather, other artists, colors, fabrics, basically anything and everything I suppose.

Words of wisdom from mistyridge?

Don't be afraid. Fear limits you in so many ways. Very few things (other than family and loved ones of course) in this world are irreplaceable. So if you have an idea to use widget x in a way that it has never been done before but you are afraid it might not work and maybe you will ruin widget x and then what will you do? Well I say go for it. If it does work then look at what you've accomplished and if it doesn't then just go get another widget x when you are able to. Also, find something you really love to do and then just go crazy with it. Do what others would think is absurd or never going to work. I mean what do you think they said to Alexander Graham Bell or the Wright Brothers? What if they had been afraid; can you imagine if we didn't have phones or airplanes etc.? Most of all have fun. If it isn't fun then its too much like work. LOL

Where are you from?

Seattle WA. I wasn't born here, but have lived here since 1977, so it feels like home. When did you start to craft?

According to my mom, as a very young kid, drawing on the walls and making designs with those little colored plastic shapes in the tub. My first real memory of sitting down and making stuff began with 7th grade sewing class, which led to photography in high school, theater design in college.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?

I heard about Etsy from a friend who encouraged me to open my shop, which I finally did in August 2007.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with?

Fiber of all kinds: wool, paper, glass, wire. I'm very tactile. For spinning yarns and needlework, I like the way wool, silk, alpaca, and cashmere feel as I work the yarn. For jewelry and paper crafts, I love the texture and the way like light reflects off the materials.

What are your inspirations?

Inspiration comes from many sources, primarily Nature and the arts. I am always looking for ways to combine our huge music collection into playlists suited to the task at hand. I create play lists for each of my crafts. A few of my favorite musicians: The Clash, Carbon Silicon, Queen, Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack, Tom Waits, Ute Lemper. For reading, I enjoy Robert Heinlein, Margaret Atwood and Wonder Woman comics (really!). As for movies,I love the Marx Brothers, Chaplin, Kurosawa and the Coen Brothers. I will also admit to my guilty pleasure to Vogue magazine, which I've read since junior high school. While the fashions are just a bit too wild for my taste, I appreciate the creativity of the fashion and photos

Try new things and not necessarily new crafts, but try new materials, listen to different music, shake up your routine to keep your perspective on the world and your crafts fresh. Some of my favorite projects have been created out of recycled materials and thrift shop gems.

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. I moved to the suburbs in 2003 and currently reside in Fishkill, NY located in Dutchess County.

When did you start to craft?

I started in 2002 with marble magnets and poorly attempted to make soaps and candles, that didn't work out so well. Before that, I have spent years seeking a creative outlet. The marbles started to appear on rings and earrings and from there I wanted to focus on jewelry.

How did you hear about Etsy and when did you join?

I opened my shop in June 2006 but I previously had a separate account as a buyer. I only purchased 1 item beforehand and it was from a friend who put out a photography zine and the only way I could get a copy is if I could purchase it from her Etsy shop.

What kind of market is your work geared towards?

It can vary. I know younger people like my items but older folks have praised my work too. My demographic are people who have a quirky personality and who like to express themselves through wearing fun accessories. That can be any age range, it's all about how you feel inside. :)

What types of crafts/artwork do you do?

I enjoy photography a lot. I enjoy taking photos and looking at others work. I wish I could learn how to knit but I fear having a bunch of unfinished hats and scarves taking up space in my apartment.

What kinds of materials do you like to work with? I enjoy working with big beads, pendants, charms. I like items that are eye catching and fun. Big and obnoxious! :) I like working with brass and gunmetal, more darker/rustic looking metals. I am not a fan of gold, never have been. I've been looking for more alternative items to use and not your standard jewelry pieces. I have been getting back into using glass marbles for rings, earrings, and hair pins.

What are your inspirations?

I really let inspiration find me. I don't seek it out. I can come up with an idea at the most weirdest time. Thankfully I have my Blackberry with me always to key in random ideas. It can happen when I'm watching television, walking down the street, or seeing an advertisement. I am very big on colors, if I see an interesting color mix, I make a mental note and figure out how to work with that.

Words of wisdom from pulpsushi?

I think it is important to take your business seriously. It is ok to get frustrated and ask "Why isn't my stuff selling?" BUT don't be public about it. That is a turn off for me when I see other sellers on messageboards complaining about their lack of sales. Sure I get discouraged too but I don't want to be seen as a whiner. I just use that emotion and enegry to hammer out new pieces to be excited about. You MUST be confident about what you make. Don't downplay yourself and what you do.
